HIS 3146 - Medieval Warfare (3) When Offered: Spring. Even-numbered years This course will examine trends in waging war from the late Roman Empire until the advent of gunpowder, roughly AD 300-AD 1400. Special attention will be paid to the changes in the Roman Army, the role of the army in the transition from Empire to Barbarian kingdoms, the Carolingian reforms, the rise of European power in the eleventh century and the Crusades, the Mongol threat, and finally, the adoption of gunpowder in the Hundred Years War.
