SOC 3345 - Communities and Crime (3)


When Offered: Fall
A study of the relationship between crime rates and the communities where people live. Topics covered include the characteristics of neighborhoods and communities that are associated with high levels of crime, the effects that high crime can have on neighborhoods and communities, the role that culture plays in the creation and maintenance of systemic social problems in local areas such as gangs and crime, community-based and formal policing solutions to offending in high crime neighborhoods, and the unique factors that contribute to crime in rural versus urban areas.
