VTN 1030 - Introduction to Veterinary Nursing (3)

This course provides an introduction to medical terminology and the role of the veterinary nurse/veterinary technician in team based veterinary medical health care. Concepts related to veterinary nurse/ veterinary technician professional education and credentialing, laws and ethics, professionalism, time management, learning strategies, and wellbeing will be introduced. This course acquaints the student with basic skills and procedures for medical history collection and initial physical examination (small and large animal). Basic concepts related to veterinary practice management, client communication, obtaining patient history and basic physical exam skills, veterinary medical records, and occupational health and safety will be introduced. This course also explores basic technical and nursing knowledge and skills, to include general patient care and concepts related to normal, healthy large and small animal patients. Safety issues will be integrated throughout the course, consistent with the CVTEA Statement on Safety Appendix, with an emphasis on zoonoses and occupational safety. Students must complete 40 observation hours in a veterinary clinical environment as part of the course.
