General Education Requirements (44 Hours)


Language Requirements (6-12 Hours)


Completion of 6 semester hours at the *intermediate level or higher

Note: Language courses 1010 & 1020 or 1030 are prerequisites for *intermediate level courses.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education Liberal Studies Experience.

Study Abroad


LLC East Asian Languages and Cultures majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester but are required to complete a minimum of 3-6 hours in a study abroad program or international internship relevant to their program of study and approved prior to departure by the advisor. This requirement may be waived by petition for those able to demonstrate a similarly significant, structured international education experience. Study abroad internship courses may be counted toward the BA Degree.

Major Requirements (37 Hours)


2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major department, plus any other courses under Major Requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. No more than 46 semester hours of the target language courses may be counted toward the BA Degree.

Writing in the Discipline [WID] Course (3 hours)


Target Language Electives (15 hours)


These electives are upper level courses in your target language of Chinese (CHN) or Japanese (JPN). At least 9 hours of this requirement must be at the 3000 level or above. Credit hours from study abroad may be used, as appropriate.

Minor Required (12-21 Hours)


  • Minimum of 9 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill minor requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. Students may double count no more than six (6) hours between the minor and the major. Students may not minor in their target language.

Electives (14-23 Hours)


Taken to total 122 hours for the degree

  • 2 semester hours of free electives must be outside the major discipline.
