General Education Requirements (44 Hours)


Some general education requirements may be double-counted in the major with departmental approval. Please see your advisor for information.

Language Requirements (6-12 Hours)


Completion of 6 semester hours at the *intermediate level or higher

Note: Beginning language course I & II or beginning combination language course are prerequisites for *intermediate level courses.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education Liberal Studies Experience.

Study Abroad


Global Studies majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for one year, but are required to complete a minimum of twelve consecutive weeks in a study abroad program or international internship relevant to their program of study and approved prior to departure by the Global Studies advisor and chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. Students for whom study abroad would pose a significant financial or personal hardship are urged to consult the chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Major Requirements (39 Hours)


2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major discipline, plus any other courses under Major Requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian.

Focus Area Within Global Studies (24 Hours)


The focus area is made up of courses drawn from one or more disciplines, departments or programs, with a single coherent emphasis in area studies (such as European Studies or Latin American Studies) or a transnational topic (such as Globalization & Development, Human Rights, or Global Health). Students may design their own focus area if the university offers courses sufficient to support it. At least 15 hours of this requirement must be at the 3000 level or above. Copies of each student’s program of study, signed by the chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies as well as the advisor, must be on file in the College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office.

 

Minor Required (15 Hours)


Students are required to minor in a foreign language. Minors are currently available at ASU in: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. A student with Global Studies major may not have a Global Studies minor.
