General Education Requirements (44 Hours)


COM 2105 , if taken for the major, may count toward the LSE in General Education. A student may count COM 3130  toward the ILE OR COM 3300  toward the LSE in General Education.

Major Requirements (45 Hours)


A cumulative GPA of 2.5 based on earned semester hours at Appalachian is required prior to declaring the Digital Journalism major.

Transfer students may be allowed to declare this major prior to earning 12 semester hours at Appalachian if they have earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA on coursework completed prior to entering Appalachian.

An overall 2.0 GPA is required in the major. 18 semester hours must be completed at Appalachian.

  • Junior Writing in the Discipline (WID)
  • Senior Capstone Experience (CAP) must be met

Major Electives (3 Hours)


Journalism majors must complete 3 hours of Communication courses

Selected topics, independent study, and internships are included as coursework major electives

Minor Required (12-25 Hours)


  • 9 hours of a minor must be completed at Appalachian

Free Electives (6-25 Hours)


To total a minimum of 120 hours for the degree
