A student may earn an undergraduate minor in Special Education with 15 semester hours of credit from courses offered by the special education program. Students must declare the minor prior to the last two semesters of residence at Appalachian, and they must obtain approval from their home college prior to contracting for the minor in Special Education by a) declare minor with home college and then b) contact the Special Education Program Director to set up an appointment and bring this form.

After being approved for the minor in Special Education, students may take five (5) of the following courses unless other courses have been identified in consultation with the Special Education Program Director. 

• SPE 3310 - Research and Issues in Special Education (3) [WID]
• SPE 3350 - Characteristics, Theories, and Diagnosis of Students with Specific Learning Disabilities (3)
• SPE 3360 - Psychoeducational Strategies with Special Needs Learners: General and Adapted Curriculum (3)
• SPE 3370 - Introduction to Developmental Disabilities and Extensive Support Needs (3)
• SPE 3380 - Assistive Technology in Special Education (3)
• SPE 3061 - Career and Practical Living Skills (1-3)
• LIT 3240 - World Literature for Children (3)
• LIT 3340 - Science of Literacy (3)
• LIT 3450 - Teaching, Literacy in Inclusive Intermediate Classrooms (3)
