When Offered: Fall GEN ED: Literary Studies Designation; Liberal Studies Experience This course will introduce students to the basics of poetry writing. An important component of the course will be careful readings and analyses of the poems in our text and other poems provided through public domain and other venues. Approximately half of class time will be spent workshopping student poems and students will also engage in in-class writing assignments. The class will also provide students with an overall historical context for poetry: its scope; trends; its development, especially during the 20th Century; its “schools” and leading practitioners; and various “kinds” of poetry, including formalism and free verse.
