ANT 3655 - Anthropology of Immigration (3) When Offered: Spring; Alternate years This course introduces students to readings in the social sciences and humanities that focus on marginalized or displaced communities of the contemporary world, whose lives are uprooted by military and political conflict, economic crisis, environmental degradation, impacts of climate change, and other forces that turn persons into the categories of “migrant”, “refugee”, and “alien” familiar to international law and twentieth century history, but seemingly intensified in recent years as human populations continue to expand. This course will look not only at the way that worlds are dismantled, but how people rebuild them, find meaning and solidarity, and create new communities for the next generation whose lives will be forever altered.
