SPE 5220 - Characteristics, Identification, and Instruction of Individuals with Specific Learning Disabilities in the General Curriculum (3) When Offered: Spring This course builds upon the definition, characteristics, and identification of persons with specific learning disabilities (SLD) to explore the impact of SLDs on reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students evaluate the impact of SLDs on students’ access to and success in a challenging curriculum and then focus on evidence-based practices, high-leverage practices, and the use of intensive intervention and explicit instruction to meet the instructional needs of students with SLD. Practice-based opportunities including case analysis, microteaching, and simulations with coaching and feedback help students to develop understanding and skill in the components of explicit instruction.
