PHL 3060 - Philosophy and Mass Incarceration (3) When Offered: Fall, Odd-Numbered Years. GEN ED: Liberal Studies Experience This course engages with the philosophical, political, and moral issues of crime, punishment, prisons, policing, and immigration with an eye to the crucial role punishment, crime, and policing play in the character and formation of the modern state and contemporary social life. More specifically, students will explore how the history of modern philosophy, democratic politics, human rights, law, and civil society are bound up with the development of capitalism, chattel slavery, colonization, and imperialism, in order to critically explore the role issues of punishment and policing play in both the historical and contemporary social issues of inequality, patriarchy, racism, and speciesism.
