The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MS-AT) degree program is offered to individuals who seek to become Certified Athletic Trainers. The MS-AT is seeking accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The curriculum is designed to provide didactic and clinical practicum experiences that meet the Professional Standards set forth by the CAATE. The educational mission of the MS-AT program is to develop evidence-based healthcare professionals with the ability to think critically and reflectively, and communicate effectively in a changing healthcare market. The MS-AT prepares students to become competent Athletic Trainers who are engaged members of the healthcare team and community, and advocates for their patients in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of injuries and illnesses.
An evidence-based capstone experience is required for each student. Students will be directed toward two options: 1) research thesis, or 2) research project (e.g., systematic review, critically appraised topic, or quality improvement project). All capstones must be evidence-based and should result in a product worthy of dissemination. Students will also have opportunities to obtain optional certifications in wilderness medicine or casting and bracing.
Admission to the MS-AT program is a competitive process. Students who wish to be admitted to this program must submit evidence of satisfactory performance in the required materials, including prerequisites, which can be found in the Program of Study. The program begins in the first Summer Session of the year, and is designed to be a two-year program.
The Master of Science in Exercise Science (MS-ES) program is offered to individuals who seek careers in various areas within the health professions. Students in the MS-ES program select one of three concentration options. The Research option includes coursework and experiences to prepare students for future Ph.D. work. The Clinical Exercise Physiology option includes coursework and experiences to prepare students for transition into a Ph.D. or Professional program, or for careers in cardiac rehabilitation and clinical research. The Strength and Conditioning option includes coursework and experiences to prepare students for careers in strength and conditioning or sports performance.
Admission to the MS-ES program is a competitive process. Students who wish to be admitted to this program must submit satisfactory completion of academic requirements, prerequisites, and GRE scores. Program admission is primarily in the fall semester, with occasional slots in spring if program openings are available.
