The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Appalachian State University educates social workers who contribute to the well-being of others through skills in advanced clinical practice, leadership and supervision, community development and advocacy, and innovative program planning and administration. Graduates will be qualified to engage in advanced social work practice to individuals, families, organizations, and communities. They are eligible to apply for their clinical social work license and/or social work manager license. Appalachian State University’s MSW Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
The MSW Program at Appalachian State University offers two concentrations:
- Individuals and Families
- Community and Organizational Practice
The MSW Program offers the following options, all of which can be completed in under a full-time or part-time basis:
- Regular 60 semester hour program beginning each fall on campus.
- Advanced Standing* 33-hour program beginning second summer session on campus each year. (The Advanced Standing on campus program begins with S_W 5001 , a week-long transitional seminar scheduled in the second summer session prior to beginning concentration coursework in the fall semester.)
- Advanced Standing* 33-hour, online program beginning second Summer session each year (internships are completed in person). (The Advanced Standing online program begins with S_W 5001 , a transitional seminar scheduled in the summer.)
* Applicants who earned a BSW Degree from a CSWE-accredited University within the past 7 years and have a 3.2 grade point average in their BSW courses may apply for the Advanced Standing program.
Location of Program: This program is offered on campus in Boone in the format described in this Bulletin. Online cohorts are also offered for Advanced Standing students.
