The Department of Kinesiology educates students in the science of human movement and performance. The department provides instruction, conducts research, delivers services, mentors students, and engages with the local community to enhance the educational experience for the student. Following graduation, the student is prepared to develop programs in a variety of professional settings and with diverse populations.
Kinesiology (KIN)
Kinesiology students examine the human body and study the effects of physical activity on its function and adaptation, through hands-on class activities, laboratories and internships.
Students must be a declared Kinesiology major or minor in order to enroll in Kinesiology courses at the 3000-level or above.
KIN GPA requirements: 2.0 cumulative GPA required for declaration, and 2.0 cumulative and 2.0 major GPA required for graduation. There are no GPA retention requirements.
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Exercise Science Concentration (812D/26.0908)
The Kinesiology, Exercise Science concentration prepares students for advanced study in the fields of exercise physiology, biomechanics, biomedical research, and for advanced study in health professional fields such as medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant / associate, athletic training, and more.
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Applied Exercise Physiology Concentration (812C/26.0908)
The Applied Exercise Physiology concentration prepares students to be qualified professionals for employment in hospital or corporate wellness programs, rehabilitation centers, and other allied health areas.
Students will be able to sit for the ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist® (ACSM-EP) credential in order to work with healthy clients and those with medically controlled conditions to establish safe, healthy and effective exercise and lifestyle behaviors.
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Strength and Conditioning Concentration (812B/26.0908)
The Strength and Conditioning concentration prepares students to be qualified professionals for employment in high school, collegiate, and professional sports programs, exercise/fitness centers, private sport training facilities, and for physical training of military, law enforcement, and fire and rescue personnel.
Students will be able to sit for the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS) credential in order to improve physical performance for the competitive, tactical, or occupational athletes including those at the youth, recreational, collegiate, or professional levels.
Minor in Kinesiology (813/26.0908) (15-20 credit hours)
Honors Program in Kinesiology
The Department of Kinesiology offers an honors program in Kinesiology to undergraduate students with distinguished academic records. Students must complete 9 hours of honors credit consisting of 3 hours of senior honors thesis (KIN 4510) under the guidance of their thesis supervisor. The remaining 6 hours of credit can be attained by negotiating an honors contract in certain Kinesiology courses at the 3000 level and above. Credit earned in courses taken for honors credit can be applied towards the undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. For admission into the honors program, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.45 in all coursework and complete a departmental application to the honors program.
To graduate with “Honors in Kinesiology” the student must complete the above honors sequence with a minimum grade of “B” in courses taken for honors credit and a cumulative GPA of 3.45 in all coursework at the time of graduation.
