Non-Teaching

General Education Requirements (44 Hours)


(SD 2400  and PHL 2015  if taken for the major may count toward General Education if fulfilling ILE: Sustainability and Global Resources; STT 2820  if taken for the major may count toward GEN ED: Quantitative Literacy)

Major Requirements (69 Hours)


2. 0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in fulfillment of the major requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian.

  • Junior Writing in the Discipline (WID)
  • Senior Capstone Experience (CAP) must also be completed

Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture Concentration (48 Hours)


No course used in above core can be used in this concentration.

Electives (12 Hours)


Electives provide breadth in agriculture, environment, food systems, and development, and help students focus their interests and gain a global perspective. One elective should address social sciences or humanities related to agroecology. Only one 1000 level course can be used to satisfy prerequisites. See the Agroecology Electives list each semester for examples and special topic courses. Electives must be chosen in consultation with your SD advisor.

Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture Specialization (18 Hours)


Specialization courses are compised of food and agriculture-related courses that form a coherent focus relevant to the student’s area of interest. Practice-based courses are key in agroecology, including internships with farms/community gardens/non-profit organizations/cooperative extension. Study abroad and independent studies are encouraged. See the Agroecology Specialization list each semester for examples. Specialization courses are recommendations rather than requirements, but must be chosen in consultation with an SD advisor. 

Minor (Optional)


  • 9 hours of a minor must be completed at Appalachian

Free Electives (7-13 Hours)


To total a minimum of 120 hours for the degree
