General Education Requirements (44 Hours)

Language Requirements (3 Hours)

Students are required to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Intermediate-level proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a 4th-semester language course in one of the following:

Note: Beginning language course I & II or beginning combination language course and intermediate language course I are prerequisites for *intermediate level II course. Placement tests are designed for placement purposes only and a score on this test alone is not sufficient to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education Liberal Studies Experience.

 

Study Abroad

LLC East Asian Languages and Cultures majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester but are required to complete a minimum of 3-6 hours in a study abroad program or international internship relevant to their program of study and approved prior to departure by the advisor. This requirement may be waived by petition for those able to demonstrate a similarly significant, structured international education experience. Study abroad internship courses may be counted toward the BA Degree.

Major Requirements (37 Hours)

2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major department, plus any other courses under Major Requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian.

Target Language Foundation Core (6 Hours)

Take 6 hours in your target language

Writing in the Discipline [WID] Course (3 hours)

Capstone Course [CAP] (1 hour)

Target Language Electives (15 hours)

These electives are upper level courses in your target language of Chinese (CHN) or Japanese (JPN). At least 9 hours of this requirement must be at the 3000 level or above. Credit hours from study abroad may be used, as appropriate. Up to two courses in the Target Language Electives may be met with other East Asian languages (languages not offered at Appalachian e.g., Korean) with the permission of the major advisor and the department chair. Two beginning level (i.e., 1000 level) language courses in other East Asian languages can be used to fulfill one of these upper level elective courses.

Culture-Area Electives (12 Hours)

Students choose electives related to their major from the list below or from other related courses with approval of the advisor. At least 6 hours of these courses should be at the 3000-4000 level.

Minor Required (12-21 Hours)

  • Minimum of 9 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill minor requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. Students may double count no more than six (6) hours between the minor and the major. Students may not minor in their target language.

Taken to total 120 hours for the degree
