Non-Teaching

Foundations of American Democracy Requirement (3 Hours)


Foundations of American Democracy Requirement  

Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements.

General Education (41 Hours)


(S_D 2400   & PHL 2015  if taken for the major may count toward General Education; or S_D 3715  /ENG 3715  if taken for the major may count toward General Education)

Language Requirements (3 Hours)


Students are required to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Intermediate-level proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a 4th-semester language course in one of the following:

Note: Beginning language course I & II or beginning combination language course and intermediate language course I are prerequisites for *intermediate level II course. Placement tests are designed for placement purposes only, and a score on this test alone is not sufficient to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education.

Major Requirements (51 Hours)


2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in fulfillment of the major requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian.

Students must complete the WID and CAP requirements:

Junior Writing in the Discipline (WID) (from S_D 3420 , S_D 3475 , S_D 3610 , S_D 3750 , S_D 3800 , or S_D 4150 )

Senior Capstone Experience (CAP) (S_D 4550 )

Required Environmental Studies Concentration (30 Hours)


Courses counted for other major requirements may not be counted in the Required Environmental Studies Concentration.

Environmental Specialization (12 Hours)


The Environmental Specialization is comprised of courses that have a coherent emphasis relevant to the student’s area of interest and that provide useful skills for social change. Courses for this requirement must be chosen in consultation with your SD advisor. Courses counted for other major requirements may not be counted in the Environmental Specialization (see examples of the SD Website: www.sd.appstate.edu).

Minor Required (12-18 Hours)


9 sh of a minor must be completed at Appalachian. Students must have their minors approved by their SD advisor.

Taken to total 120 hours for the degree
