Program Requirements
General Education Requirements (44 Hours)
Some general education requirements may be double-counted in the major with departmental approval. Please see your advisor for information.
Major Requirements (41-46 Hours)
(not including 15 semester hours for science & math and PSY 1200 already counted in Area I above)
2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major department, plus any other courses under major and concentration requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered through Appalachian.
Introduction to Discipline (4 Hours)
Research Methods (7-8 Hours)
(*Grade of “C” or better required)
Foundations of Psychological Science (12 Hours)
Choose at least one course from each of the following pairs of courses
(PSY 3100 is a prerequisite/co-requisite for each of these courses)
Doing Psychology (must total 3 Hours)
Choose at least one LABORATORY course from the following
(PSY 3100 is prerequisite for PSY 4211 -PSY 4217 )
Choose at least one Research or Fieldwork course
Any PSY Service Learning course will fulfill this requirement except PSY 2100 .
Applied Psychology (6 Hours)
Choose at least two courses from the following
Capstone Course (3 Hours)
Choose at least one course from the following
(PSY 3100 is a prerequisite for each of these courses)
Psychology Elective Courses (Choose 6 Hours)
(PSY 1200 is a prerequisite for each of these courses)
Choose at least 6 hours from courses beyond the requirements in sections C - F above or the following:
Science/Math Requirement (15 Hours)
Any math and science lab courses up to 12 hours can be used in both general education and this requirement. An additional 3 hours must be taken from AST, BIO, CHE, GLY, PHY, STT, MAT, or E S 2031 or E S 2032 . Classes excluded from the additional hours are STT 1810 , STT 2810 , STT 2820 , MAT 0010 , and MAT 1010 .
Health Studies Concentration (21 Hours)
Minimum of 21 semester hours
Any course used to satisfy a general education requirement cannot be used to satisfy a concentration requirement.
All courses from Exercise Science and Public Health must be from the 2000 level or above; Biology courses may be at 1000 or above.
21 semester hours must come from at least two of the following academic areas: Biology, Exercise Science, Public Health, NUT 2202 , NUT 4552 , PHL 3015 , PSY 2305 .
