Foundations of American Democracy Requirement


Foundations of American Democracy Requirement  

Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements.

General Education Requirements (41 Hours)


Language Requirements (3 Hours)


Students are required to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Intermediate-level proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a 4th-semester language course in one of the following:

Note: Beginning language course I & II or beginning combination language course and intermediate language course I are prerequisites for *intermediate level II course. Placement tests are designed for placement purposes only, and a score on this test alone is not sufficient to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education.

Study Abroad (Optional)


LLC East Asian Languages and Cultures majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester in a study abroad program or international internship relevant to their program of study and approved prior to departure by the advisor.

Major Requirements (30 Hours)


2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major department, plus any other courses under Major Requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian.

Target Language Foundation Core (6 Hours)


Chinese:

CHN 1040 and CHN 1050 may count as Chinese major electives below.

CHN 1050 is a prerequisite to all 2000 level courses.

Japanese:

JPN 1040 and JPN 1050, OR JPN 1060 may count as Japanese major electives below.

JPN 1050 OR JPN 1060 is a prerequisite to all 2000 level courses.

CHN 1040 and CHN 1050 may count as Chinese major electives.

JPN 1040 and JPN 1050, OR JPN 1060 may count as Japanese major electives.

-Choose 12 hours of Chinese (CHN) OR Japanese (JPN) electives at the 1040 level or above for a total of 30 hours under the Major Requirements. At least 3 hours must be at the 3000 level or above. Credit hours from study abroad may be used, as appropriate. One course in the Target Language Electives may be met with a course taught in another East Asian language (languages not offered at Appalachian e.g., Korean) with the permission of the major advisor and the department chair, and two beginning level (i.e., 1000 level) language courses in other East Asian languages can be used to fulfill one of these upper-level elective courses.

Minor Required (12-21 Hours)


  • Minimum of 9 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill minor requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. Students may double count no more than six (6) hours between the minor and the major. Students may not minor in their target language.
