GHY 3016 - Place and the American South (3) When Offered: Fall; Spring GEN ED: Social Science Designation; Integrative Learning Experience (Theme: “American Culture: Past and Present”) This class will evaluate various images and interpretations as we try to understand the influence of the American South on American cultural identity. Students will explore the origins, development, and diffusion of the concepts of race, and the social, cultural, and geographical manifestations of race in different American South regions and during different historical periods. Topics include colonial settlement, spatial patterns of slavery and race, regional folk culture, geopolitics, place, globalization and social change. (Global Learning Opportunity course)
