This course examines the idea of the public sphere and its continuing evolution in western democratic theory and practice. It focuses on the rights and responsibilities of democratic citizens and critiques of the public sphere in landmark texts in political theory. It also explores current challenges facing the public sphere in western democracies, including electoral controversies, the Internet and social media, transnational democracy and cultural differences, contending religious faiths, postcolonial and other freedom struggles.
