C_J 3340 - Problem-Solving Courts (3) When Offered: On Demand This course examines the use of problem-solving courts as an alternative to the American adversarial criminal court system. Three distinct types of courts will be examined throughout the semester: drug courts, mental health courts, and veterans treatment courts. The underlying phenomena which prompted the creation of these courts will be reviewed, followed by the examination of empirical research on each type of court. By the end of the course, students will have developed knowledge on how problem-solving courts differ from our traditional court system and their effectiveness when compared to the traditional model of court sanctions and sentencing.
