This course examines the conceptualization and use of punishment through the sentencing of offenders with a particular emphasis on the American context. Through the exploration of the historical foundations, practical applications, and various shortcomings of our criminal justice system, students will critically analyze various avenues of system reforms. By the end of the course, students should have a foundational understanding of the multifaceted nature of punishment and sentencing, along with the ability to critically evaluate the implications of utilizing different sanctioning approaches to achieve intended outcomes.
