HIS 5591 - Archives, History, and Collective Memory (3) When Offered: Spring.Odd-numbered years This course will examine the relationship between history and archives with a focus on the impact these disciplines have on the construction of collective memory. Students in this course will consider such historical and archival issues as the process of memory construction, public history display, commemoration, the writing of history, and the formulation of political and national identities through the lens of the archival record. The class will consider the use or misuse of archives to shape political or social myths and the use of documents to influence a shared historical consciousness.
