General Education Requirements (44 Hours)


  • ECO 2030  and ECO 2040  (6 hours) count towards the General Education Liberal Studies Experience requirement
  • A foreign language course at the 1050/1060 level counts as 3 hours of the General Education Liberal Studies Experience requirement
  • MAT 1035  must be taken to meet the Quantitative Literacy requirement (1 hour of ECO 2100  will meet the other hour)

Language Requirements (6-12 Hours)


Completion of 6 semester hours at the *intermediate level or higher

Note: Language courses 1010 & 1020 or 1030 are prerequisites for *intermediate level courses.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education Liberal Studies Experience.

Major Requirements (36 Hours)


Major GPA of 2.0 is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken as part of section Foundation Courses, Capstone/Applied Research Course, Required Courses and Economics Electives. A minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. No more than 46 semester hours of Economics courses may be counted toward the B.A. Degree. Common prerequisites for 3000/4000 level economics courses are 54 hours to take any 3000 level economics course, 84 hours and a minimum grade of “C” in a WID course to take any 4000 level economics course.

Required Minor (12-21 Hours)


  • A minimum of nine semester hours of courses taken to fulfill the minor requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian State University.

Electives (25-34 Hours)


  • Taken to total 122 hours for the degree; two semester hours of free electives must be outside the major discipline
