General Education Requirements (44 Hours)


COM 2121 , COM 2124  or COM 3130  (three hours) may count in Gen Ed: ILE and COM 2105 , COM 3300   COM 3315  may count in Gen Ed: LSE. (up to six hours).

Major Requirements (48 Hours)


A cumulative GPA of 2.5 based on earned semester hours at Appalachian is required prior to declaring the Communication Studies major.

Transfer students may be allowed to declare this major prior to earning 12 semester hours at Appalachian if they have earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA on coursework completed prior to entering Appalachian.

An overall 2.0 GPA is required in the major. 18 semester hours must be completed at Appalachian. 18 semester hours must be taken at the 3000 level or higher.

  • Senior Capstone Experience

Public and Professional Contexts (18 Hours)


At least two courses (6 hours) must be selected from each context

Minor Required (12-25 Hours)


  • 9 hours of a minor must be completed at Appalachian
