A student may earn an undergraduate minor in Special Education with 15 semester hours of credit from courses offered by the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education. Students must declare the minor prior to the last two semesters of residence at Appalachian State University, and they must obtain approval from their home college prior to contracting for the minor in Special Education: General Curriculum. 

How do I declare or change a minor?

  • If you are currently a declared student in the Reich College of Education and seeking to add or change a minor you must complete the RCOE Add/Change Major or Minor Form on our website.
  • If you are a student whose major is not declared in the Reich College of Education and seeking to add or change a minor, you must complete your respective college’s process.

After being approved for the minor in Special Education, students must take a minimum of five (5) of the courses listed below, unless other courses have been approved by the Special Education Program Director.

You must take a minimum of 15 total credit hours. At least 9 hours must be core classes.
