Program of Study for the Master of Arts in History
Basic Admission Requirements: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and a complete application to the Graduate School . Additional Admission Requirements: - Personal Statement

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the criteria for admission to the Graduate School . Meeting this condition does not guarantee admission. Letters of Recommendation: Three Exam Scores: GRE Standardized Exam Waiver Eligibility: The standardized exam may be waived for applicants who have: - A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in your bachelor’s degree; OR
- An earned master’s degree.
Location: Boone Campus Accelerated Master’s Program
This program offers an Accelerated Master’s  option for undergraduate students with a 3.2 or higher currently enrolled at Appalachian State University. Course Requirements for the Master of Arts in History
Total Required (Minimum 36 Credits)
Required Courses (9 Credits)
Choose 6 Credits from the Readings Seminars
Note: The same course number can be taken more than once if content is different. Concentration Requirements (27 Credits)
Electives (9 Credits)
9 credits of graduate electives from the following Public History Courses, or students may select up to 6 credits of other graduate courses upon approval of the coordinator of the Public History Concentration and the Director of Graduate Studies in History. Other Requirements for the MA in History
- Thesis: Optional
- Proficiency: Required for General History Concentration only. Students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a foreign language by either taking the necessary courses for credit and earning a C or above in each course, or passing the exam administered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
- Candidacy: Required for thesis students only; awarded upon approval of thesis committee and prospectus
- Comprehensive: A written comprehensive examination is required by the end of the third semester of course work for thesis students, and by the end of the fourth semester of coursework for non-thesis students.
- Product of Learning: Required for Teaching Concentration only.
