Nutrition and Health Care Management is concerned with the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. The two areas have a specific focus and prepare entry level professionals who can demonstrate competency and function effectively in their chosen career.
Nutrition and Foods (NUT)
Nutrition is concerned with food quality, food security, safety and adequacy; nutrition and diet; and the effective management of foodsystems.
Academic Policies and Standards for Retention
All NUT students must maintain the academic standards for retention set forth by Appalachian State University, the Beaver College of Health Sciences, and the NUT Program. NUT students are expected to abide by Appalachian State University’s Code of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Code.
NUT students in the Dietetics Concentration are expected to display the characteristics set forth in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Code of Ethics and the following standards:
- Scholastic Performance;
- Professionalism;
- Ethical Behavior;
- Interpersonal Relationships; and
- Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion.
Failure to meet the standards may result in dismissal from the program. The standards are fully described in the NUT Student Handbook linked on this page.
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition - Dietetics Concentration (840B/51.3101)
The Nutrition and Foods, Dietetics concentration is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Upon graduation, the student is qualified for an accredited Dietetic Internship.
NUT Dietetics GPA requirements: 2.8 cumulative GPA required for declaration, 2.8 cumulative GPA required for retention, and 2.5 cumulative and 2.0 major GPA required for graduation.
NUT Dietetics grade requirements: All NUT Dietetics majors must earn a minimum grade of “C” (2.0) in each required course in the major.
In order to remain in the concentration and earn a verification statement for supervised practice, students must: maintain a 2.8 cumulative GPA, earn a “C” (2.0) in each required course in the major, attempt required courses in the major no more than twice (1 repeat), and earn a “C” (2.0) in all ACEND-required knowledge requirements for dietitian nutritionists (KRDN) student learning objectives. Please see the Student Handbook for more information regarding retention guidelines/policies.
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition - Foodsystems Management Concentration (840C/51.3101)
The Nutrition and Foods, Foodsystems Management concentration prepares students for management positions in various foodsystems, including restaurants, hotels, nonprofit organizations, governmental and public health agencies and institutional foodservice - school systems, healthcare organizations, and colleges, as well as hospitality and tourism, global food systems, and sustainability. Foodsystems Management students complete a 200 hour internship in one food service operation or organization.
NUT Foodsystems GPA requirements: 2.0 cumulative GPA required for declaration, and 2.0 cumulative and 2.0 major GPA required for graduation. There are no GPA retention requirements.
NUT Foodsystems grade requirements: All NUT Foodsystems majors must earn a minimum grade of “C-” (1.7) in each NUT course.
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition - Nutrition and Wellness Concentration (840D/51.3101)
The Nutrition and Wellness concentration prepares students to fill positions at the local, state, national and global levels, including jobs within government health agencies such as WIC, Head Start, 4-H, cooperative extension, school systems, non-profit agencies, food systems and food security organizations, environmental education, and community health programs across the state, region, country and globally. Additionally, the Nutrition and Wellness concentration will prepare students who seek careers in corporate wellness, nutraceuticals, wellness facilities or further education in the health sciences. Nutrition and Wellness students complete a 200 hour internship in a nutrition and wellness facility or organization.

Health Care Management (HCM)
Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management (845A/51.0701)
Health Care Management prepares students for entry level administrative or management jobs in health delivery organizations (such as hospitals, physician’s offices, long-term care facilities or outpatient centers), health-related government agencies, and other businesses that support health care delivery (insurers, medical suppliers, pharmaceutical companies, etc.). Students will complete an internship of 300 hours in a health care or health-related organization where the student can apply principles and knowledge gained in the classroom setting. The Health Care Management degree is certified nationally by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.
Academic Policies and Standards for Retention
HCM students must maintain the academic standards for retention set forth by Appalachian State University, the Beaver College of Health Sciences, and the HCM Program. HCM students are expected to abide by Appalachian’s Code of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Code. HCM students also must comply with the American College of Healthcare Executive’s Code of Ethics, and the following HCM standards:
- Scholastic Performance;
- Professionalism;
- Ethical Behavior;
- Interpersonal Relationships; and
- Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion.
Failure to meet the standards may result in dismissal from the program. The standards are fully described in the HCM Student Handbook linked on this page.

Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (846A/51.0000)
The health sciences degree is only designed for transfer students who have completed an associate of applied science (AAS) degree in an allied health field from a North Carolina Community College. This degree program prepares students for leadership roles within their discipline, for teaching within their discipline at a community college, or for pursuing a post-graduate degree at a later date.

Note: 18 hours in the major must be earned at Appalachian State. At least 15 hours of courses in the major must be at the 3000-level or above.
