Additional Notes


  • SW GPA requirements: 2.0 cumulative GPA required for declaration, 2.5 cumulative and major GPA required for admission to the Professional Sequence, 2.5 cumulative and major GPA required for retention, and 2.5 cumulative and major GPA required for graduation.
  • SW grade requirements: All SW majors must earn a minimum grade of “C” (2.0) in each required SW and cognate course.
  • Students may repeat a social work course only once. Students may repeat only two social work courses throughout the program.
  • Social work majors must receive a “Satisfactory” grade in Field Placement in order to graduate.
  • Many cognate courses can count toward General Education but not all will due to placement in themes. See your academic advisor if you have questions.

  • Students receive information on the process for applying to the Professional Sequence while enrolled in SW 3000 . Eligible students must apply by the deadline established for that semester.
  • Students receive information for the process for applying for a Field placement while enrolled in SW 3870 . Eligible students must apply by the deadline established for that semester.
  • Social Work field instruction requires students to complete 32 hours per week of field work (440 hours) and attend Senior Seminar, which is held each Friday morning and afternoon. The 32 hour a week requirement is firm; students may not work more hours in a week to complete field work early. Students should plan accordingly.
  • Students participating in University Honors and/or Departmental Honors will have additional requirements; all must be met prior to Field semester when students are enrolled in SW 4650  and SW 4690 .
  • 18 s.h. in major and 9 s.h. in minor must be at App State.
  • 25% of the degree hours must be in residency at App State.
  • As stated in the catalog, the final responsibility for meeting graduation requirements remains with the student.
