Foundations of American Democracy Requirement

Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements.

Language Requirements (3 Hours)

Students are required to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Intermediate-level proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a 4th-semester language course in one of the following:

Intermediate Language Course II

Combined Intermediate Language Course

or
Higher level language courses
(A higher-level language course that requires one of the above listed courses as a prerequisite may also be used to fulfill the language requirement.)

Note: Beginning language course I & II or beginning combination language course and intermediate language course I are prerequisites for *intermediate level II course. Placement tests are designed for placement purposes only, and a score on this test alone is not sufficient to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education.

Major Requirements (39 Hours)

2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major discipline, plus any other courses under Major Requirements.

Writing in the Discipline: Choose one (3 Hours)

Writing Courses: Choose four (12 Hours)

(+ course may be repeated for credit when professor or content varies. Please contact the Program Director, Assistant Chair of English, or the Department Chair for approval.)

Literature Courses (6 Hours)

Choose six (6) hours of ENG courses at the 3000 level or higher in literature.

Senior Capstone: Choose one (3 Hours)

Minor Required (12-21 Hours)

Minimum of 9 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill minor requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian

Electives (16-25 Hours)

Taken to total 120 hours for the degree

4000-level courses require Writing in the Discipline [WID] or instructor’s permission.
Courses cannot double count for more than one category in the major, including the concentration.
Students may double count no more than six (6) hours between the Film Studies minor and their major.
