Foundations of American Democracy Requirement (3 Hours)


Foundations of American Democracy Requirement  

Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements.

General Education Requirements (41 Hours)


Some general education requirements may be double-counted in the major with departmental approval. Please see your advisor for information.

Language Requirements (3 Hours)


Students are required to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Intermediate-level proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a 4th-semester language course in one of the following:

Note: Beginning language course I & II or beginning combination language course and intermediate language course I are prerequisites for *intermediate level II course. Placement tests are designed for placement purposes only, and a score on this test alone is not sufficient to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency.

Language courses 1050 or 1060 may be used in General Education.

Major Requirements (40 Hours)


2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major discipline, plus any other courses under Major Requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian.

Anthropology Electives (24 hours)


  • 6 hours at 2000 level
  • 6 hours at 3000/4000 level
  • 6 hours at 4000 level
  • 6 hours at any level

*Minimum grade of “C-” (1.7) required.

Students may not enroll in a course as a capstone if they have already taken the parallel course (e.g., ANT 4250  for ANT 4251 ; ANT 4320  for ANT 4321 ; ANT 4470  for ANT 4471  etc.). Students should therefore consult with their advisors before selecting seminars and electives.

Minor (Required) (12-21 Hours)


Minimum of 9 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian State University.

Electives (15 -24 Hours)


Taken to total 120 hours for the degree.
