Foundations of American Democracy Requirement (3 Hours)

Foundations of American Democracy Requirement  

Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements.

General Education (41 Hours)

SPECIAL NOTE: It is recommended that Elementary Education majors take ENG 2360  along with one of the following: ART 2022 , MUS 2022 , or THR 2022 .

Professional Education Requirements (24 Hours)

A minimum grade of “C” (2.0) must be earned in all Professional Education Courses by Teacher Education majors.

• EDU 2000 - Introduction to Learners, Teachers, and Schools (3) +
• EDU 2100 - Social Foundations of Education (3) +
• EDU 3000 - Diverse Learners: Teaching and Learning (3) #
• EDU 3100 - Assessment for Learning (3) #
• EDU 4900 - Student Teaching (12) [CAP]

• +Must be taken prior to admission to Teacher Education

• #Prerequisites: EDU 2000 , EDU 2100 , and Admission to Teacher Education. EDU 3000  and EDU 3100  should not be taken concurrently.

Major Requirements (55 Hours)

MUST complete with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0)

Required (3 Hours)

• PSY 3010 - Psychology Applied to Teaching (3)

Block I (6 Hours)

MUST take concurrently after admission to teacher education before Block II. EDU 3000  must be taken as a part of Block I. It is recommended that a student take one course from the Themed Strands as well as the Directed Elective during the same semester as Block I.

• LIT 3340 - Science of Literacy (3)
• MAT 3000 - Mathematics for the Elementary School Teacher (3)

Block II (15 Hours)

MUST take concurrently after admission to teacher education after Block I, and before Block III

• C_I 3230 - Investigating Mathematics and Learning (3) *

• or

• MAT 3230 - Investigating Mathematics and Learning (3) *

• C_I 3000 - Learner Diversity: Teaching English Language Learners (3) [WID]
• C_I 3110 - Social Studies in the Elementary School (3) (10 hours service learning included)
• LIT 3440 - Literacy Methods in the Elementary Grades (3)

• C_I 3750 - Technology Integration in the Elementary Classroom: Management, Citizenship, and Community (3)

• C_I 3402 - Children as Citizens: Building Classroom Community (3)

  * Prerequisite: MAT 3000  and R_C 2001  or its equivalent; Admission to Teacher Education.

Themed Strands (12 Hours)

MUST complete before Block III. 12 hours of the major requirement are from the Themed Strands.

Choose three (3) hours from each Theme Strand

Choose one of the following (3 hours) or an appropriate substitution approved by an advisor

MUST take concurrently after admission to teacher education, after Block II, and before student teaching

• C_I 4401 - Methods of Elementary Science Teaching (3)

Note

A student must have at least a 2.70 grade-point average to be admitted to the teacher education program, and must maintain a 2.70 grade-point average overall through student teaching.
