I. Language (3 Hours)
Students should have language proficiency at the 1020- level (Beginning II) or above (3 hours). This requirement can be met by any language for which Appalachian gives credit, including American Sign Language (ASL), on campus or through study abroad. (Pre: language at 1010 level or placement test score) - Language 1020 Beginner II level of language (3) or higher; if ASL is chosen to fulfill language requirement, the course chosen must be ASL 3370 or higher
II. International Content (9 Hours)
At least 6 hours of non-foreign language coursework taken while completing Cross-Cultural Experience (III. below) may count towards this requirement. Other courses that count in this area may come from Global Studies, Anthropology, History, Political Science, Geography, Languages and Literatures, or Sustainable Development, including courses in General Education. III. Cross-Cultural Experience (3 Hours)
Students participate in an international OR a domestic cross-cultural experience that carries at least 3 credit hours. International: Students participate in an international service-learning program or in a short-term study abroad program or a virtual international exchange course/program. A semester or a year-long study abroad program would count in this category as well.
OR
Domestic: Students complete at least one service-learning course (SL), or 40 hours of service or community outreach. IV. Reflection
Students will complete a series of reflections on their experiences to address the local and global connections of their experiences. Any portfolio work done as part of a capstone (CAP) course can count here, for example. Contact the certificate advisor for details. Note:
Appropriate application of coursework will be developed with the assistance of the LLC department. Notification of courses will be made to the CAS Dean’s Office.
