Foundations of American Democracy Requirement
Foundations of American Democracy Requirement Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements. General Education Requirements (41 Hours)
Professional Education Requirements (24 Hours)
A minimum grade of “C” (2.0) must be earned in all Professional Education Courses by Teacher Education majors. NOTE:
To be admitted to Teacher Education, students must have a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA, completed 30 semester hours, completed criminal background check and successfully completed testing requirements for Reading, Writing and Math areas of the PRAXIS I CORE (or exempt based on SAT or ACT scores). See Admission to Teacher Education . Minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA required for admission to Teacher Education, Student Teaching and graduation. Refer to the Initial Licensure Teacher Education Student Handbook for complete details related to Teacher Education admission, GPA, edTPA, Student Teaching and testing requirements. Major Requirements (36 Hours)
2.0 major GPA is required for graduation. Major GPA calculation will include all courses taken in the major department, plus any other courses under Major Requirements. Minimum of 18 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill major requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. All students who wish to enroll in courses taught in Spanish on the level of 2000 or above must see an advisor in the department before enrolling. Spanish Core (21-24 Hours)
SNH 1040 and SNH 1050 OR SNH 1060 may count as electives for the Spanish major requirements. SNH 1050 OR SNH 1060 is a prerequisite to all 2000 level courses. Students placing out of SNH 1040 and/or SNH 1050 will take additional upper-level electives in Spanish to total 30 hours in SNH for the degree. Please note: In most cases, Heritage speakers of Spanish should bypass 1000-level coursework and complete only SNH 2006 (3 hours) for the “Required Language Core.” All other students will complete both SNH 2005 and SNH 2010 (6 hours).* *SNH 2005 and SNH 2010 should be taken during the same semester. Choose one CAP course for the Spanish major requirement: Spanish Electives (12-15 Hours)
Choose 12-15 hours of Spanish electives at the SNH 1040 level or above, excluding SNH 3520, for a total of 36 hours under the “Major Requirements.” SNH 1040 and SNH 1050 OR SNH 1060 may count as electives for the Spanish major requirements. Please note: Nonheritage speakers (who take SNH 2005 and SNH 2010) will complete a total of 12 hours of “Spanish Electives.” Heritage speakers (who take SNH 2006) will complete a total of 15 hours of “Spanish Electives.” Minor (Optional)
Note: Students seeking a BS degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with a concentration in Spanish, Education (K-12) (137C) are not permitted to declare a Spanish minor or a Spanish for Health and Helping Professions minor. Electives (19 Hours)
