Foundations of American Democracy Requirement  

Three (3) credits of Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) are required for degree completion. Courses that meet this requirement may also be used to meet other major, minor, or General Education requirements.

Professional Education Requirements (24 Hours)

A minimum grade of “C” (2.0) must be earned in all Professional Education Courses by Teacher Education majors.

• EDU 2100 - Social Foundations of Education (3) +
• EDU 3000 - Diverse Learners: Teaching and Learning (3) #
• EDU 3100 - Assessment for Learning (3) #
• EDU 4900 - Student Teaching (12) [CAP]

• +Must be taken prior to admission to Teacher Education

• #Prerequisites: EDU 2000 , EDU 2100 , and Admission to Teacher Education. EDU 3000  and EDU 3100  should not be taken concurrently.

Major Requirements (54 Hours)

MUST complete with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0)

Integrating the Arts (3 Hours)

Choose one of the following (3 hours):

• ART 3021 - Visual Art in the Elementary School (3)
• MUS 2024 - Music Methods for the Classroom Teacher (3)
• THR 2856 - Teaching Theatre, K-5 (3)

Expanding Pedagogical Content Knowledge (3 Hours)

Choose one of the following (3 hours):

• C_I 3401 - Teaching About Life and Environments In the Elementary School (3)
• C_I 3404 - Investigating Critical Literacy in Multiple Media Genres (3)
• C_I 4220 - Integration of STEM Teaching and Learning in K-9 Settings (3)

Expanding Teacher Content Knowledge (3 Hours)

Choose one of the following (3 hours):

• ENG 3240 - World Literature for Children (3)

• or

• LIT 3240 - World Literature for Children (3)

Choose one of the following (3 hours) or an appropriate substitution approved by an advisor

Block I (12 Hours)

MUST take concurrently after admission to teacher education before Block II. EDU 3000  must be taken as a part of Block I. It is recommended that a student take one course from Integrating the Arts strand or the Directed Elective during the same semester as Block I.

Block III (12 Hours)

MUST take concurrently after admission to teacher education, after Block II, and before student teaching

EDU 3100  needs to be taken as part of Block III

• C_I 4045 - Teaching Mathematics to Upper Elementary School Learners (3)
• C_I 4495 - Block 3 Field Experience (1-3)

Electives (1-10 Hours)

Taken to total 120 hours for the degree

Note

A student must have at least a 2.70 grade-point average to be admitted to the teacher education program, and must maintain a 2.70 grade-point average overall through student teaching.
